Transitioning your dog to a raw diet is a significant but rewarding change that offers many benefits, such as improved digestion, better coat health, and increased energy
At RawFedK9, we’ve created a simple and supportive transition process that helps ensure your dog adapts to their new, nutrient-dense raw food without the digestive upset. Whether you’re switching from kibble or another raw brand, this guide will walk you through the steps to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Before You Start: Get Prepped
The first step in a successful transition is preparation. Here’s what you’ll need to do before you begin:
Use the Raw Feeding Calculator
To ensure your dog is getting the right amount of food for their size and needs, start by using our handy Raw Feeding Calculator. This tool helps you determine the exact daily amount of raw food your dog needs based on their weight and activity level.
Order Your Transition Pack
Start with lean meats, like chicken, to ease your dog into the raw diet. Our Transition Pack includes both Pure Meat and Complete Mix options, which are formulated to help your dog’s digestive system adjust smoothly. Make sure to pick the correct case size to cover the first 16 days of their transition.
What to Expect Along the Way
Loose Stools? No Problem!
It’s normal for your dog to experience soft stools during the initial transition. This is part of the adjustment process as their body adapts to the nutrient-rich raw food. Over time, as their digestive system adjusts, stools should firm up.
Every Dog is Unique
Each dog is different—some may adjust quickly, while others may take a little longer. Be patient, and if you have any concerns, check out our FAQ for additional support.
Variety is Vital
To ensure your dog receives a broad spectrum of amino acids and other essential nutrients, we recommend feeding 3-4 different proteins each month. Variety not only keeps meals exciting but also helps provide adequate nutrition.
Transition Timeline
Our structured transition timeline ensures that your dog’s digestive system has the time it needs to adjust. Here’s a breakdown of how to move your dog onto a raw diet:
Days 1–5: Start Slow
During this phase, you’ll start with Pure Meat patties only, feeding your dog just this lean protein. This gentle start helps ease their digestive system into the new diet.
Feed only Pure Meat patties for each meal.
Days 6–9: Introduce Variety
By now, your dog should be adjusting well. If everything is going smoothly, begin introducing some variety by offering a 50/50 mix of Pure Meat patties and Complete Mix patties. This will give your dog additional nutrients and help keep the transition going smoothly.
50% Pure Meat patties and 50% Complete Mix patties per meal.
Days 10–15: Full Transition
Now it’s time to start transitioning fully to Complete Mix patties. Gradually shift to offering Complete Mix for all meals, and watch your dog thrive on their new diet.
Complete Mix patties for every meal.
Day 16: New Flavors, New Favorites!
Congratulations on making it through the transition! Now that your dog is fully adapted, you can start introducing new proteins to keep meals exciting and nutritionally balanced. Remember, rotating 3-4 proteins each month is ideal for a well-rounded diet.
Introduce new proteins into the rotation and explore new flavors!
Switching from Another Raw Diet
If you’re already feeding your dog a raw diet, the transition to RawFedK9 is easy. Here’s how to switch:
Day 1: Feed 75% of your current raw diet and 25% RawFedK9.
Day 2: Increase to a 50/50 split of your current raw diet and RawFedK9.
Day 3: Shift to 25% of your current raw diet and 75% RawFedK9.
