Transitioning to Raw Dog Food: What to Expect During the First Few Weeks
Transitioning your dog to a raw diet is a process that takes a little planning and patience. Every dog adjusts at their own pace, and understanding what the transition period may look like can make the experience much smoother. Below is information on how to transition from kibble to RawFedK9 or from another raw company to RawFedK9.
Days 1 to 5: Starting the Transition
During the first few days, your dog is simply being introduced to a different type of food and feeding routine.
At this stage, we recommend feeding Pure Meat patties only. Starting with a single protein option allows dogs to adjust to the change in food texture and moisture content.
Some dogs transition quickly, while others take a few days to adjust to the new meals.
During this stage, you may notice:
• Curiosity around the new food
• A change in stool texture or frequency
• Your dog is taking time to get used to the new routine
These early adjustments are common anytime a dog's diet changes.
Days 6 to 9: Introducing Variety
Once your dog is comfortable with the new meals, you can begin introducing Complete Mix patties (PMR).
At this stage, we recommend feeding:
50% Pure Meat patties and 50% Complete Mix patties
This allows dogs to gradually move toward the prey model raw, while still keeping the transition manageable.
Days 10 to 15: Moving to Complete Mix
As your dog continues adjusting to the new routine, meals can shift fully to Complete Mix patties.
At this stage, many dogs are comfortable with the new raw food.
Day 16 and Beyond: Adding Protein Rotation
After the transition period, many owners begin introducing additional proteins.
At RawFedK9, we generally suggest feeding 3 to 4 different proteins throughout the month. Rotating proteins introduces variety and allows dogs to experience different animal sources over time.
Rotation can be done in several simple ways:
• Mixing proteins in one meal
• Rotating proteins each day
• Rotating proteins each week
• Rotating proteins when ordering new boxes
The goal is simply to feed a variety that best suits your feeding routine.
Determining How Much to Feed
Before beginning the transition, it’s helpful to determine the correct feeding amount.
Our Raw Feeding Calculator can provide a starting point based on your dog’s weight and activity level. From there, adjustments can be made as needed depending on your dog’s routine and seasonal activity levels.
Transitioning from Another Raw Diet
If your dog is already eating raw food, switching to RawFedK9 can be done easily as well.
A simple transition example:
Day 1 – 75% current raw food / 25% RawFedK9
Day 2 – 50% current raw food / 50% RawFedK9
Day 3 – 25% current raw food / 75% RawFedK9
Day 4 – 100% RawFedK9
Every Dog Transitions Differently
Some dogs transition very quickly, while others may take more time. Paying attention to your dog and moving at a pace that works for them is the most important part of the process.
