What's Actually in RawFedK9's Trio? A Closer Look at Our Three-Protein Mix
One of the questions we get asked pretty regularly at RawFedK9 is, "What exactly is Trio?"
If you've been browsing our proteins, you've probably noticed Trio sitting alongside options like Beef, Chicken, and Pork. Those names are pretty self-explanatory, but Trio doesn't exactly tell you what's inside the package. Is it three different meats? Do you get three separate proteins? Is it something different from our other Complete Mix options?
The short answer is that Trio is a combination of beef, pork, and chicken, all ground and mixed together into one Prey Model Raw formula.
But there's a little more to it than simply combining three types of meat. Our Trio contains muscle meat, bone, and organ from those protein sources, and understanding what's actually included can help you decide whether it's an option you'd like to add to your dog's feeding routine.
Three Proteins, One Formula
When you select Trio, you're not receiving separate portions of Beef, Pork, and Chicken Complete Mix. Instead, those three protein sources are combined into one formula.
Like our other Complete Mix products, Trio follows our 80/10/10 Prey Model Raw structure. That means the formula consists of 80% muscle meat, 10% raw crushed bone, and 10% organ.
What makes Trio different is the variety of ingredients used to make up those percentages. Rather than relying on one primary animal protein, we're using ingredients from three different animals within the same mix.
And while beef, pork, and chicken are the three main proteins, the ingredient list includes more than the cuts of meat most people are familiar with.
So, What's Actually Inside Trio?
Here's the full ingredient list for RawFedK9 Trio:
Beef Meat, Beef Hearts, Beef Trachea, Pork Meat, Pork Heart, Pork Snouts, Chicken Meat, Chicken Hearts, Beef Liver, Beef Kidney, Pork Kidney, Pork Liver, Pork Spleen, Chicken Liver, and Chicken Bone.
It's a longer ingredient list than you'll find in some of our single-protein Complete Mix options, but every ingredient has a place within the formula.
For example, beef hearts, pork hearts, and chicken hearts may sound like organ ingredients, but within Prey Model Raw, heart is categorized as muscle meat because it's muscular tissue. The same goes for ingredients like beef trachea and pork snouts, which are included among the animal tissues that make up the formula.
Then there are the organs, including liver, kidney, and spleen. These come from multiple animal sources rather than just one. Chicken bone provides the raw crushed bone portion of the mix.
This is also a good example of why we encourage customers to look at the full ingredient list instead of relying only on a product's name. Trio tells you the three protein sources, but the ingredient breakdown tells you exactly which parts of those animals are included.
You can find the ingredients for all our Complete Mix options on our Nutritional Information Page.
How Does Trio Compare Nutritionally?
Something that might surprise you is that combining beef, pork, and chicken doesn't mean Trio's nutritional analysis will fall neatly between those three individual formulas.
Every Complete Mix has its own ingredient combination, and the natural fat, moisture, and protein content can vary depending on what's included.
Here's how Trio compares with our individual Beef, Pork, and Chicken Complete Mix formulas:
| Formula | Moisture | Fat | Protein | Calories per 8 oz |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trio | 74.77% | 10.29% | 14.40% | 340 |
| Beef | 60.44% | 19.01% | 20.90% | 577 |
| Pork | 66.81% | 12.11% | 17.30% | 404 |
| Chicken | 75.78% | 10.55% | 10.50% | 317 |
Looking at the numbers, Trio actually has a lower listed fat percentage than our individual Beef and Pork Complete Mix formulas, and its calorie count is much closer to Chicken than Beef.
That's why it's worth looking at the actual nutritional information when choosing proteins. Just because a formula includes beef doesn't automatically mean it has the same fat or calorie content as our Beef Complete Mix.
The combination of ingredients matters, and each formula has its own nutritional profile.
Does Feeding Trio Count as Protein Rotation?
This is another question worth talking about, especially since we recommend rotating three to four different proteins and fat levels throughout the month.
Trio introduces ingredients from beef, pork, and chicken within a single formula, so your dog is receiving all three animal protein sources when eating it. However, feeding Trio every day isn't quite the same as rotating between different Complete Mix formulas.
For example, feeding Trio alongside Kangaroo, Bison, or Salmon would introduce other ingredient combinations and nutritional profiles into your dog's routine.
You also don't have to make protein rotation complicated. Some customers like switching between different proteins throughout the week, while others work through one box before moving on to another. There's flexibility in how you organize your rotation based on your dog's feeding amount and the products you order.
If you'd like to learn more about building variety into your dog's feeding routine, we have another blog covering why protein rotation matters when feeding raw food.
Is Trio a Good Option for Every Dog?
Trio can be a convenient way to include beef, pork, and chicken in one Complete Mix, but there are a few things to consider before ordering.
Because it contains ingredients from all three animals, it's important to know exactly what your dog is eating. If you're intentionally avoiding chicken, for example, Trio wouldn't be an appropriate choice simply because beef and pork are also included.
The same goes for anyone trying to keep track of individual protein sources. A formula containing multiple animal proteins doesn't give you the same control over ingredients as choosing a mix with a shorter list of animal sources.
On the other hand, if your dog already eats beef, pork, and chicken and you're looking for another formula to include in your rotation, Trio may be worth considering.
There's no need to choose Trio just because it contains more than one protein. It's simply another option within our lineup, and knowing what's inside makes it easier to decide whether it fits your feeding routine.
Where Can You Find RawFedK9 Trio?
Trio is available in several of our Complete Mix formats, so you can choose the portion size that works best for your household.
Our 8 oz patties are available in the 10 lb Sample Pack and 30 lb Full Case. If you prefer smaller portions, Trio is also available in our 3 oz medallions. For customers who like purchasing larger quantities and portioning food themselves, Trio is among the available options in our 5 lb chub products.
Depending on which product you're ordering, you can also select Trio alongside another protein rather than purchasing an entire order of the same formula.
If you're new to Trio and aren't sure whether you want to purchase a larger amount, the Complete Mix Sample Pack is one way to try it alongside another protein.
Now You Know What's in Trio
So the next time you're browsing RawFedK9 and see Trio listed as a protein option, you'll know exactly what you're looking at.
It's our three-protein Complete Mix made with beef, pork, and chicken ingredients, including muscle meat, organ, and raw crushed bone. It follows the same 80/10/10 Prey Model Raw structure as our other Complete Mix formulas, but has its own ingredient list and nutritional profile.
And if you've ever wondered whether Trio meant three separate proteins or one combination, now you know. It's all three, together in one mix.
